Appcetera Social Links Plugin

When your web page is shared to Twitter or Facebook, these sites will analyse your content and try to extract the header, a portion of the content and the main image to display on the post/tweet. Unfortunately, they often do not grab the correct information. This is usually due to the layout of your theme, so if it fails once, it probably fails most the time.

To make the information more accurate, and a better marketing message, Twitter and Facebook have released a set of ‘metadata’ signals that can be hidden in your page header and point to the correct information. You need to have code added to your theme, or in a plugin to include this information.

To see if you have the social signals active, view the source of your webpage and look for the tags, like the ones used on this site.

This Appcetera Social Links Plugin allows you to add the metadata required by Twitter and Facebook when your content is shared. This data includes;

  • Sharing the featured image. (Facebook and twitter do not always find the correct image without help)
  • Sharing twitter handles
  • Giving the heading title of the page
  • Giving a summary of the content
  • Also now in WordPress Core, you can add links to many social sites, youtube and now also your own website. The featured image will also come up if in use.

Appcetera Social Links Plugin

This was originally written as a simple code snippet in a function to add to themes, but then we were asked to produce an example plugin to do the same thing. Now we have had a few requests and more features are added.

We have added the meta tag for registering with Google Search Console, which allows you to gain valuable data from Google search about the conditional of your website and for Google Tag, which allows you to automate the use of advertising tags using Google.

Updates
